Make your own upcycled Denim Jacket (In-person workshop at the Hera Vintage studios)
Who is this class for?
As part of the sustainable fashion workshops at Hera Vintage, the Upcycled Denim Jacket Workshop is ideal for beginners who want to try their hand at creating their first sewing project
It is also for more experienced sewers who would like to learn more about sustainable fashion and the art of upcycling through visible mending and strengthening of fabrics by using patching and sashiko stitch.
What will I learn?
You will learn how to upcycle a tired and damaged denim jacket using a vintage embroidered panel
· How to find your way around a sewing machine
· How to take a pattern from the back panel of the jacket
· How to cut out and apply your embroidered panel to make the most of the design
· Basic stitches and sewing in straight lines
· How to use visible stitch to repair and strengthen vintage garments and fabrics
· The ancient art of sashiko stitch
What will I take away from the day?
You will take away your very own upcycled denim jacket,
A set of written instructions so you can re create similar pieces at home
A better understanding of sustainable fashion, repair and upcycling that you can take forward to future creative endeavors.
(Please bare in mind that this project is a slow fashion one, so although you will have started the sashiko stitch during the day you will most likely have some more hand sashiko to continue at home.)
How much experience do I already need?
This class is for beginners –I am on hand to help and guide throughout the day so no need to be nervous !!
What do I need to bring?
You will need to bring a denim jacket of your choice and a fabric panel that you would like to decorate your jacket with, this can be printed, embroidered or tapestry fabric. If you would like me to source a jacket or panel please get in touch, this can be arranged at an additional cost.
Time; 7 hours including a 30 min lunch break. (10 am-5.00pm)
