Upcycled Hair Scrunchie Workshop - March 2023

  • Hera Vintage 104 Buxton Rd Whaley Bridge, England, SK23 7JH United Kingdom (map)

As part of the sustainable fashion workshop series at Hera Vintage, the Upcycled Hair Scrunchie Workshop is ideal for beginners who want to try their hand at creating their first sewing project. Equally this would suit more experienced sewers who want to learn about sustainable fashion and the art of upcycling through the use of patching and sashiko stitch.

Ahead of the workshop you will source a denim jacket and tapestry (guidance on what you’re looking for will be given) which you will then combine on the day to make your own unique piece like the one above using our in-house industrial sewing machines. You will then learn how to strengthen and repair any damage by hand using a combination of patching and the ancient Japanese art of Sashiko stitching.

Skills you’ll learn on the day:

  • How to find your way around a sewing machine

  • Basic stitches and sewing in straight lines

  • Hand finishing seams using a needle and thread

  • How to make the most of old damaged fabrics

  • How to make basic visible repairs to the fabric as a form of decoration and repair

  • How to use a pattern, how to lay, mark and pin the pattern to fabric and cut out

  • The preparation of your cut pieces for construction

  • Sewing seams

What will I take away from the day?

  • You will take away your very own upcycled hair scrunchie

  • A paper pattern and full instructions so you can re-create similar pieces at home

  • A better understanding of sustainable fashion, repair and upcycling that you can take forward to future creative endeavours.

How much experience do I already need?

This class is for beginners – I am on hand to help and guide throughout the day so no need to be nervous!!

What do I need to bring?

You will be provided with all the materials you will need to make your scrunchie including pattern fabrics, thread and use of all the studio equipment, however if you have some fabrics of your own please feel free to bring along to incorporate in your design.
