As part of the sustainable fashion workshop series at Hera Vintage, the Upcycled Tote Bag Workshop is ideal for beginners who want to try their hand at creating their first sewing project. Equally this would suit more experienced sewers who want to learn about sustainable fashion and the art of upcycling through the use of patching and sashiko stitch.
Ahead of the workshop you will source a denim jacket and tapestry (guidance on what you’re looking for will be given) which you will then combine on the day to make your own unique piece like the one above using our in-house industrial sewing machines. You will then learn how to strengthen and repair any damage by hand using a combination of patching and the ancient Japanese art of Sashiko stitching.
Skills you’ll learn on the day:
How to find your way around a sewing machine
How to take a pattern from the back panel of the jacket
How to cut out and apply your embroidered panel to make the most of the design
Basic stitches and sewing in straight lines
How to use visible stitch to repair and strengthen vintage garments and fabrics
How and where to apply Sashiko stitch
What will I take away from the day
You will take away your very own upcycled Denim jacket, please bare in mind that this project is a slow fashion one, so although you will have started the sashiko stitch during the day you will most likely have some more hand sashiko to continue at home.
full instructions so you can re create similar pieces at home
A better understanding of sustainable fashion, repair and upcycling that you can take forward to future creative endeavours.
How much experience do I already need ?
This class is for beginners –I am on hand to help and guide throughout the day so no need to be nervous !!
